Abandoned in the 13th century because of environmental problems linked to deforestation and erosion, the Mayan site of Copán in Honduras remains threatened by the continuous erosion of the river and the microflora as well as by the development of agricultural activities and the expansion of the neighbouring town. Located in a seismic zone, its archaeological vestiges were also damaged by at least two earthquakes. The ongoing extension of the archaeological park should help strengthen its integrity.
