The madreporaria are the main architects of the coral reef but the contribution of all the other organisms is far from negligible. The shellfish tests, the spicules of sponges and echinoderms, all the skeletons of vertebrates and invertebrates contribute to the growth of the reef by filling the gaps between the hard constructions.
