Built of wood and cob

The church of the Exaltation-de-la-Sainte-Croix (Exaltation of the Holy Cross) stands above the village of Bailly-le-Franc in the Aube. The building is one of a dozen timber-framed churches erected in the vicinity of the Lac du Der-Chantecoq between the 15th and 18th centuries. A slate-covered spire towers 26 metres above the nave. For lack of building stone in the region, the old churches were built of cob and wood. The nave consists of four sections lit by a row of narrow bays with old stained glass windows. The choir has five sides, but only two side walls have openings.
