The Canal du Rhône à Sète connects the Étang de Thau in Sète to the Rhône in Beaucaire. Beyond the Étang de Thau, it is extended by the Canal du Midi. Its 60.8 miles (98 km) course has a single lock and can be divided into two parts: the crossing of the ponds south of Montpellier between Sète and La Grande-Motte and that of the wet plains of the Petite Camargue between Aigues-Mortes and Beaucaire. The construction of the canal's first section (Beaucaire / Aigues-Mortes) was decided in 1773 to free the trade between the Rhône and Sète from the navigation on the Petit-Rhône.
