The shells build their calcium carbonate shell from dissolved calcium brought by their food or the seawater. The cells of the outer rim of their mantle elaborate the test by depositing limestone in an organic framework called conchyoline. The shell is formed of three layers : the periostracum (superficial membrane), the ostracum (main layer consisting of polygonal crystalline prisms) and the hypostracum (nacre).
