The two villages of Septmoncel and Molunes in the Jura department merged in 2017. In addition to the lapidary craft (cutting of precious and semi-precious stones) perpetuated today, Septmoncel les Molunes is also known for its cheese made with milk from Montbéliardes cows or Pies Rouges des Montagnes. Bleu de Septmoncel, whose recipe dates back to the 19th century, is still found in small mountain dairies that carry on the tradition and feed their cows only with local fodder, the condition for obtaining the “Bleu de Septmoncel” AOC label.
