The configuration of Maré Island corresponds to its tormented geological history which appears clearly at the level of its coastline. The island is made up of reef limestone constructions which have been raised by the folding of the Australian plate. Of biological origin, they are the coral reef of an ancient shoal made up of calcareous algae and madrepores which has been covered with vegetation after the complete emergence of the island.
