The most favorable Polynesian lagoons for the production of pearl oysters are the closed lagoons with rare 'hoa' - boat channels - limiting the exchanges between the ocean and the lagoon waters which are sources of larval losses. They must be relatively deep with many coral heads rising almost to the surface.
