The Gallery of Apollo in the Louvre Palace was an opportunity for Louis XIV to associate his image with that of the sun. He commissioned the architect Louis Le Vau to rebuild the Louvre’s Petite Galerie, which had just burned down. From 1661 to 1663, Le Vau rebuilt the building and the first floor gallery, which was 61 metres long and 10 metres wide. The ceiling contains works by Charles Le Brun, the king’s First painter, and other painters from the Royal Academy. The stucco work was entrusted to four sculptors who followed Le Brun’s sketches. At the corners of the ceiling, seated captives are leaning against a trophy. They symbolise the four continents that the sun travels through on its daily journey.
