Located in the south of the Hérault department, Marseillan is a French municipality that has belonged to the Sète Agglopôle Méditerranée urban community since December 31st, 2002. There are two other homonymous communes in France, one in the Gers and the other in the Hautes-Pyrenees department. The coastal town, which shares one side with the Mediterranean and the other with the Étang de Thau (Thau pond) had 7,734 inhabitants in 2019. The economy of Marseillan was initially mainly based on shellfish farming and viticulture. Today, it is also oriented towards tourism thanks to the Marseillan-Plage seaside resort.
