Comrades in arms

The 9,387 marble-white crosses in the Colleville-sur-Mer American Cemetery all indicate the buried soldier’s name and State of origin. On 307 of them however, there is nothing but the inscription 'Here lies in honored glory a comrade in arms known but to God'. The Garden of the Missing is bordered by a long-arched wall made up of a multitude of stone plaques, on which are inscribed, separated by laurel leaves, the full name, rank, unit, and State of origin of the 1,557 missing (listed in alphabetical order), whose remains were neither identified nor found.
