Notre-Dame d'Alençon was built in the heart of the Grande Rue by Count Charles III in 1356. After the Hundred Years' War, work carried on until 1518, including an imposing Flamboyant Gothic portal completed in 1510. The Transfiguration of Christ is represented along with the prophets Moses and Elijah and the apostles Peter, James, and John. The whole is surmounted by pinnacles adorned with flowers and grimacing gargoyles. Notre-Dame Church became a basilica in 2009.
