In winter, cattle spend a lot of energy to cope with low temperatures. This phenomenon must be compensated by an intake of energetic feed to prevent the animals from drawing on their body reserves. However, if the fermentation of the fodder fibers produces a lot of heat during digestion, their energy value is low. The fodder rations distributed by the farmer must therefore be supplemented with foods with a higher energy value, such as cereals and oilseeds.
