The second most disadvantaged country in Central America, Honduras ranks 27th among the world's poorest countries. Its 9.1 million inhabitants have a poverty rate of 64.3% and, in rural areas, almost one in five inhabitants lives in extreme poverty with less than 1.90$ per day (1.66€). Yet, the government is seeking to diversify agriculture, improve transport infrastructures and develop hydroelectricity, and many non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are helping the development of farming communities on the spot.
