The lively colors of corals largely depend on their environmental conditions, including the lighting and water temperature. Many of them live on the upper part of the Polynesian reefs, i.e in shallow waters where - to protect themselves from the light radiation - they synthesize the chromo proteins at the origin of their bright colors.
