Pink-colored unicellular algae form the basis of the diet of Artemia salina shrimps in the lagoons and brackish ponds of Camargue. They produce and contain photosynthetic pigments, including carotenoids similar to those carrots and other plants hold. Ingested by the shrimps themselves eaten by greater flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus), the pigments are transmitted throughout the food chain and participate in the coloring of its various links.
