The term ocher refers to a clay (kaolinite) colored by various iron oxides and hydroxides. The color palette - from red to brown and yellow - depends on the proportions of these various oxides and can increase with the presence of manganese oxide. In the Provençal Massif des Ocres, this colored clay is associated with sand constituting up to 90% of the raw rock.
