The numerous reefs and keys (small low islands mainly composed of sand and coral) of the Gulf of Honduras, are known as the Pelican Cayes. In the fall, American white pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) - which live in the northernmost latitudes up to Canada - migrate there by the thousands. They nest on the islets and frequent the inland's fresh waters.
