The large urban residences excavated at the archaeological site of La Villasse in Vaison-la-Romaine were equipped with an impluvium, a system allowing to collect and transport rainwater to a storage place. The waters flowed to the atrium (the inner courtyard of the house) through the compluvium (an opening in the roof) and fell into the impluvium, the square or rectangular basin in the center of the atrium.
