Unlike the glass cane hollowed to allow glass blowing, the pontil is a full cane used by the master glassmaker to supply the glass with elements that must not be blown, such as the handles of an item or even its foot. The end of the pontil receives a small mass of molten glass that is glued to a glass object during its manufacture.
