También llamado colibri rutilante o común, es una ave apodiforme de la familia de los colibríes.
Se distribuye en buena parte de América del Sur y hay dos subespecies. Es un ave nectivora de un tamaño regular y denota cierta agresividad con otras aves nectivoras ( otros colibríes).
Vive en las montañas y zonas altas de Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela y llega a encontrarse en Argentina y Chile.
Fue descrito por John Gould en 1846.
