If coconut palms are inseparable from the image of Epinal of tropical islands, the ecological conditions of Lifou Island (poor soil, nitrogen and potash deficiencies, low rainfalls and cool temperatures in the dry season) impose recommendations of manure for their intensive cultivation. In addition, Brontispa longissima, responsible for major damage to plantations, has been present on the island for a long time. This insect of the Chrysomeles family native to Indonesia feeds on the interior of the still closed leaves which dry and turn brown.
