Cocconerion balansae, or 'bloodwood', is a tree with more or less pubescent branches which can reach 82 to 98.4ft (25-30m) high. Endemic to New Caledonia, it is present in five distribution areas in southern Grande-Terre ranging between 984 and 2624ft (300-800m) above sea level and covering 259sqmi (418km2). Growing on ultramafic substrates in humid forests or at their edges, it is threatened by brush fires and feral pigs.
