Known for its large shoals filled with cod, Newfoundland, off Labrador in Canada, was discovered during the 16th century. The religious practices of fasting and bans on meat at that time pushed fishermen to find fish in quantity. From 1520, Newfoundland fishermen left from Granville for a 6 to 7 months season with crews of 20 to 30 men. The fish was cut and salted on land or directly on the boat. The activity gradually declined, and only five cod fishers remained in Granville's port in 1930.
