Clos de Vougeot’s old well

The Clos de Vougeot castle has an old stone well, in an open-air room near the courtyard, as was the custom in the Middle Ages. One would draw water by arm force, or with the help of a pulley, pendulum, or crank. At Clos de Vougeot, drawing the groundwater is made easier thanks to a big wooden wheel pulley: pulling on the rope or chain triggers the pulley mechanism, which helps lifting heavy buckets of water out of the well.
