According to researchers, the karstification of Makatea island is linked to the alternation of the Quaternary glacial and interglacial periods during the island uplift and to their opposite climatic conditions. The various hot and humid interglacial episodes favored the dissolution of the carbonate formations whereas the cold and dry glacial periods allowed their evacuation.
