The internal and external slopes of the carbonate construction which constitutes the island of Maré are cut by numerous terraces, flat areas and notches which testify to the tectonic or eustatic movements of the raised atoll and illustrate its progressive emersion. The intense karstification of the carbonate construction results in the presence of classical forms of dissolution (sinkholes) and deposit (limestone concretions, residues).
