The municipality of Clécy in the Calvados department is located in the Massif Armoricain on the Orne river 21.7 miles (35 km) south of Caen. Its territory extends over 6,086 acres (2,463 ha) between 101 and 856 ft (31 and 261 m) above sea level in the heart of Norman Switzerland, renowned for its rugged and verdant terrain. Clécy became the capital of Norman Switzerland in 1932, a name given in the 19th century to several regions of Normandy - notably those of Bagnoles-de-l'Orne, Falaise, Saint-Clair, Clécy, Athis, and Pont d'Ouilly - following the discovery of the Swiss landscapes by the first tourists and the dissemination of their images.
