The Unterlinden convent was founded in 1232 by canonesses of the Dominican order. Built between 1262 and 1269, the church consists of a four-bay nave covered by a roof. The choir has seven bays and a polygonal apse. This type of architecture became widespread in Alsace during the 13th century. The cloister was built after the church, still in the Gothic style. Closed during the Revolution, the convent became the property of the town of Colmar. Left abandoned, it housed a regiment of lancers before being transformed into a museum in 1849. The Unterlinden Museum has been listed as a Historic Monument since 4 May 1852.
