In the Kanak universe, the individual is nothing outside the group and the group can only develop from the land to which it is attached. Each individual belongs to a clan which has its own symbols. The clans are grouped into tribes led by a Little Chief placed under the authority of a Big Chief whose influence extends to an entire district. The Mu tribe in Lifou is one of the 341 tribes of New Caledonia, they include from 4 to more than 1,200 members.
