If local legends claim that God, alerted by the angels, would have created cicadas to prevent the inhabitants of Provence from taking a nap and forcing them to work and cultivate their land, according to a Greek myth taken up by Plato in Phèdre cicadas were born of men who, transported with pleasure by the song of the Muses, forgot to eat and drink and died. The cicadas thus received from the Muses the privilege of not needing any food and of being able to sing from their birth and to their death without eating nor drinking.
