Chronology and inclination of Maré reef terraces

The evolution of the tilting direction of the ancient Maré atoll is responsible for the inclination of the island's reef terraces. The oldest surfaces, horizontal at their creation, were then inclined towards the southwest while the median surfaces, with a more constant thickness, remained horizontal during their lifting. As for the most recent terraces of the former lagoon bottom, they slope to the northeast.
