Contrary to what one might imagine at the sight of some postures of greater flamingos (Phœnicopterus roseus), they do not have the ability to bend their knees upside down. Their legs do have two main joints with the knee and the ankle, but the most visible one is their ankle and not their knee, which is located very close to their body. Like in all digitigrades, the flamingos' ankles are very high on their limbs at the approximate position of the knees in humans.
