The International Equestrian Federation defines as a pony any horse whose height in adulthood is less than or equal to 1.48 meters or 58.26 inches at the withers for an unshod animal and 1.49 meters or 58.66 inches at the withers for a shod animal. This classification between pony and horse by its size alone provides an objective criterion for qualifying sporting events for horses and ponies. As a general rule, the pony (photo) has a conformation different from that of the horse in the thickness of its mane, tail, and coat and in the shorter and thicker proportions of its legs, body, neck, and frame.
