Cette chenille s’observe de juin à septembre. Elle mesure jusqu’à 7 centimètres de long.
Elle présente un corps jaune traversé par plusieurs bandes longitudinales noires entrecoupées au milieu de chaque segment abdominal.
Son corps est recouvert de fines soies blanches, non urticantes.
Sa tête est noire et présente un Y jaune inversé lorsqu’on la voit de face.
Elle deviendra le papillon tête de taureau (Phalera bucephala)
