Stalactites are limestone columns that point to the ground. Their formation is the work of water combined with the chemical action of carbon dioxide (CO2). By eroding the rocks that it crosses, the water loads with limestone which agglomerates when its flow is very slow. The naturally dissolved CO2 in water acidifies it and, participates in the disintegration of the limestone molecules during a slow chemical decomposition.
