Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a prosperous Vaucluse municipality whose economy was favored early on by its establishment near two ancient trade routes: the Rhône river route and the Roman main road that linked Arles to the south and Lyon in the north. From the 14th century, the village produced lime and tiles, benefited from a free port for the salt trade, and cultivated vines. The establishment of the Popes at the beginning of the 14th century and the construction of their castle widely contributed to the fame and dynamism of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The reconstruction of the vineyard after the phylloxera crisis of 1866 allowed the development of the wine trades that remain at the heart of the current economic activity of the village.
