The Château du Clos de Vougeot was built in the 12th century by the Cistercian monks of the Abbey of Cîteaux. In 1551, the 48th abbot of Cîteaux, Dom Jean XI Loisier, restored the original building, making it less austere. The castle in its current form dates to the 16th century.
