Seul Château de la Loire construit dans le lit du fleuve, le Château de Montsoreau - Musée d'Art Contemporain a été édifié en 1450 par Jean II de Chambes, proche conseiller du Roi Charles VII. Son histoire a été marquée par de nombreux personnages tels que Marie Stuart, Anne de Bretagne, Claude de France, Henri IV et François Ier. Par son architecture avant-gardiste, il a de tout temps inspiré les artistes de Rodin à Turner, Flaubert et Alexandre Dumas.
