Napoleon III commissioned a number of works at the Louvre, including that of the Denon Pavilion. In 1864, Charles-Louis Müller was entrusted with the interior decoration of the dome of the first floor salon. The painter chose to represent the patronage of French sovereigns towards the fine arts and painted the four lunettes of the dome as tapestries. In the centre of one of the paintings, Napoleon I is surrounded by famous people of his time: Beaumarchais, Châteaubriand, David, Guérin. In the background, we can see the main monuments of his reign, such as the triumphal arch of the Carrousel, the Vendôme column, and the façade of the National Assembly.
