The Centre Pompidou-Metz presents sketches of stained-glass windows by Marc Chagall, intended for churches in the Grand-Est region in France. Although he was of Russian Jewish origin, he considered the Bible as a great source of poetry and inspiration for his work. Powerful colors of symbolic significance and avant-garde influences also characterize Chagall's creations. For example, he used yellow as a representation of the Divine. He sometimes glued pieces of paper or fabric to the sketches of his stained-glass windows. They served as indications about the right texture of color he requested from the master glassmakers he collaborated with.
