El chacal de Sri Lanka ( Canis aureus naria ), también conocido como el chacal del Sur de la India, es una subespecie de chacal de oro nativo del sur de la India y Sri Lanka .
En el continente asiático, el chacal de Sri Lanka se encuentra en toda la parte sur de la península de la India , desde Thana , cerca de Bombay , en el noroeste hacia el sur a través de la Ghats Occidental , Mysore , el Ghats del este y Mandura . Así mismo y por lógica, está localizado en toda Sri Lanka .
Sin embargo este chacal tiene diferencias con el continental: es de mayor tamaño, hay diferencias en su estructura molar, y en pelaje también tiene diferencias pues el de este último es un pelaje más oscuro y más pigmentado.
El chacal es un mamífero eminentemente carnívoro. Recorre grandes distancias buscando presas, y es un animal valiente capaz de enfrentarse a otros de mayor tamaño, defendiendo a su camada o a su alimentación.
