All the natural habitats of Grande-Terre - the main island of New Caledonia - have been affected by the expansion of the rusa deer (Cervus timorensis russa) population introduced in New Caledonia in 1870. Even if they are more concentrated in the northern and western parts of the island, they are also frequently found in the central chain which prompts hunters to distinguish the chain deer from the seaside deer.
