Central American agouti

The Central American agouti (Dasyprocta punctata) is a small rodent which ranges from 40 to 60 cm (16 to 24 in) and weights from 1 to 4 kg (2 to 9 lb). Inhabitants call it the guatasa.
This monogamous animal lives in pairs on a fixed territory which contains fruiting trees and a source of water. To intimidate another male, this territorial animal erects its rump’s hairs, thumps the ground with its hind legs and cries with small barks.
This vivacious herbivore is also an important seed disperser.
