Surrounded by bastioned ramparts

In 1538, in the political context of the Italian Wars and the conflict between him and Charles V, Francis I decided to strengthen the military defense of Saint-Paul-de-Vence by having a bastioned enclosure built there. Occupied in 1524 and besieged in 1536 by the troops of the King of Spain, the strategic location was surrounded by the most modern ramparts of the time. Designed by Jean de Saint-Rémy, a commissioner of artillery and an expert in fortifications, they consisted of powerful curtains and four solid bastions protecting the two gates of Saint-Paul-de-Vence.
