Ceiba is a genus of trees in the family Bombacaceae, according to the classical classification, or Malvaceae, according to the phylogenetic classification, which has about ten species. These large trees, up to 229 feet (70 meters) high, emerge above the tropical forests. Their thick trunks with gray and smooth bark are generally widened with buttresses at their base. Their young branches are protected with thorns. Their rounded, parasol-like canopies provide ample shade. Their soft and long wood is used to make canoes.
