When the top of a waterfall with waters laden with bicarbonate and calcium progresses faster downstream than its bottom, an overhang can form which surmounts caves or shelters, as here the caves of Baume-les-Messieurs in Jura. The walls of the waterfall and its immediate surroundings are lined with plants in areas that are infrequently flooded as well as mosses and various chlorophyll organisms in areas which are always wet.
