The dissolution of its limestone cliffs has multiplied the caves all around the island of Makatea. Some are only accessible by boat, others are located below sea level and are only visited by divers. Their difficulty of access and exploration feeds the legends of treasures hidden by pirates and Spanish galleons and contributes to the mysterious character of the island.
