The skin of the masked moray is thick and viscous to better slip into the crevices of rocky areas or coral reefs. It is covered with a protective mucus that allows the moray to sneak more easily. The masked moray can occasionally hide in the algae of sandy bottoms but it is rather cavernicolous or cryptic hence its specific pigmentation.
