Le 6 mai 1211, sous le règne de Philippe Auguste, l'archevêque Aubry de Humbert pose la première pierre de l'actuelle cathédrale de Reims. C'est le troisième édifice construit sur le même emplacement: la première cathédrale datait du Ve siècle et la seconde du IXe - fut détruite par un incendie le 6 mai 1210.
2303 statues sont réparties sur l'ensemble de l'ouvrage.
